Crawford W. Long Museum
The Crawford W. Long Museum in Jefferson, Georgia, is "the birthplace of anesthesia." The museum celebrates the work of Dr. Crawford Long who, in 1842, was the first to perform surgery using ether as anesthesia. In addition to the medical building, the museum includes the Pendergrass Store, a general store built in 1848. A re-created doctor’s office and apothecary shop can be found in the fact of the store. The museum, located at 28 College Street just off the public square in down town Jefferson, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Jefferson is about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta four miles off I-85 on U.S. 129 (exit 137). Note: The museum will be closed for a brief period during the spring of 2008 for major restoration work on its historic buildings. Check the museum web site for details. |
